India’s refusal to uphold a global gig work law

Date Published

India has not adopted the international gig work law aimed at improving conditions for platform workers. The law, with binding standards for rights, remains unrecognized, affecting millions in precarious employment.

As the global push for improved rights for gig workers accelerates, India has refused to ratify the ILO Convention No. 193, which seeks to provide essential protections for platform workers. This refusal means that millions of workers dependent on app-based jobs will continue to lack the basic rights and securities that the convention aims to establish.

The convention stipulates rights addressing issues like pay, timely payment, occupational safety, and health standards for gig workers. With India's sizeable gig economy, the lack of this recognition showcases a significant gap in labor protections, leaving many vulnerable without formal regulations to safeguard their employment conditions.

Trade bodies and labor rights advocates are calling for urgent action to address these oversights, indicating that without formal adoption, workers will remain in precarious situations with no guaranteed protections.
