India implements sweeping labour reforms despite union opposition

Date Published

India's government has begun implementing comprehensive labor reforms, which have faced strong opposition from labor unions claiming the changes undermine worker protections. The reforms are considered some of the most significant in decades.

The Indian government has officially rolled out its four new labor codes, which affect various sectors regarding worker treatment, rights, and hiring practices. Although the government argues these reforms are essential for attracting investment and modernizing labor regulations, they have sparked considerable dissent from union leaders and labor rights advocates.

Critics argue that these changes will disproportionately benefit employers at the expense of workers, potentially dismantling years of progress towards fair labor standards and protections.

The emphasis on simplifying compliance and promoting flexibility within the labor market has raised alarms among workers’ rights organizations, who fear that the shift could lead to increased job insecurity and lower overall protections for vulnerable workers.
