50-year-old veteran, 23-year-old engineer — Microsoft’s voluntary exit offer puts employees at crossroads

Date Published

Microsoft has opened a Voluntary Exit Offer to its global employees, letting around 60,000 opt for a financial package. This move raises concerns, particularly for employees on H-1B visas, as it complicates their immigration status.

In a significant policy change, Microsoft has extended a Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) to approximately 60,000 employees worldwide, allowing them to leave the company with a financial package. This offer comes amidst the company’s ongoing investment in artificial intelligence and cloud services, as it restructures its workforce.

Indian employees constitute a large segment of Microsoft's workforce in the country, estimated at around 23,000. The VEO includes a severance package that accounts for the length of service, accompanied by health insurance and transition services for future employment.

For Indian professionals working in the US under H-1B visas, acceptance of this exit offer poses significant risks. Employees who leave without securing another job face complications regarding their immigration status, although they may have a 60-day grace period to find new employment.

The initiative raises questions around employment security for international workers and the challenges posed by the current immigration landscape, especially for those holding non-immigrant visas.
